Mountain View City Park Grasmere

Branch of Darul Uloom Ravia Ilyas Magaliesburg

Mountain City Islamic Centre is a community-based Islamic organisation established solely for the pleasure of Allah (SWT) and dedicated to serving the spiritual, educational, and social needs of the Muslim community in Mountain View, Grasmere, Johannesburg.

The center mission is to strengthen and empower the community through Islamic education, Da'wah, youth development, social welfare programmes, and community empowerment initiatives while extending the beauty, compassion, and teachings of Islam to those seeking guidance. The Centre is committed to nurturing a knowledgeable, united, and self-reliant Muslim community founded upon the principles of faith, compassion, service, and social responsibility.

Community Background

Mountain View, Grasmere (Region G, City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality) is a disadvantaged informal and semi-urban settlement situated south of Johannesburg near Finetown and Ennerdale.

The area is characterised by high levels of unemployment, poverty, limited public services, and inadequate social infrastructure. Despite these challenges, the local Muslim community continues to grow steadily, with many families embracing Islam and requiring ongoing religious guidance, education, and welfare support.

A significant proportion of current congregation consists of new Muslims (reverts) who rely on the Centre for Islamic education, mentorship, spiritual development, and community integration.

Current Situation

Mountain City Islamic Centre currently serves approximately 162 beneficiaries through its religious, educational, and welfare programmes. Despite the growing needs of the community, all religious activities are presently conducted from a modest 12 square metre zinc structure (Zozo hut).

Current Situation

The existing facility has:

  • No electricity

  • No running water

  • No ablution facilities

  • Extremely limited space

  • No dedicated classrooms

  • No office or counselling space

These conditions severely restrict our ability to accommodate worshippers, provide quality Islamic education, conduct community programmes, and expand our outreach initiatives.

Nevertheless, by the grace of Allah (SWT), the Centre continues to serve the community with unwavering dedication despite these significant limitations.

Our outreach initiatives are designed to foster understanding, strengthen faith, and build positive relationships within the wider community through:

  • Teaching authentic Islam based on the Qur'an and Sunnah

  • Supporting and mentoring new Muslims

  • Public Islamic awareness and educational programmes

  • Home visits and pastoral care

  • Community engagement and outreach

  • Promoting social cohesion, compassion, and peaceful coexistence

Through these initiatives, the Centre continues to serve as a beacon of hope, guidance, and community development for one of Johannesburg's most underserved Muslim communities.

By the grace of Allah (SWT), we aspire to establish a fully equipped Islamic Centre that will provide a dignified place of worship, comprehensive educational facilities, and sustainable community development programmes for generations to come.

Phase One Development Project

Establishing a Permanent Place of Worship and Learning

Mountain City Islamic Centre seeks to establish a modest yet dignified Islamic facility that will provide a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for worship, Islamic education, Da'wah, and community development.

The current 12 m² zinc structure is no longer adequate to accommodate the growing needs of the congregation. The proposed first phase focuses on creating essential infrastructure that will immediately improve the quality of services offered to the community while laying a strong foundation for future expansion.

Phase One Components

The first phase of the project will include:

  • Construction and installation of a 24 m² Wendy House or Log House to serve as a Jamaat Khana (prayer facility) and Madrasah.

  • Installation of a solar lighting system to enable evening prayers, Qur'an classes, and community programmes.

  • Supply and installation of quality flooring and prayer carpets.

  • Shelving and secure storage for copies of the Qur'an, Islamic literature, educational materials, and administrative records.

  • Installation of a JoJo water storage tank to provide water for ablution and general use.

  • Basic site preparation and associated installation costs.

Target to Raise: R50, 000.00

This initial investment will transform the Centre from a temporary zinc shelter into a functional community facility capable of serving the current congregation while accommodating future growth.

Phase Two Vision

As the Muslim community continues to expand, Mountain City Islamic Centre intends to embark on a second phase of development.

Subject to future funding, Phase Two will include:

  • Drilling and equipping a borehole to provide a sustainable water supply (cost to be determined following a professional site assessment).

  • Expansion of the prayer facilities.

  • Dedicated classrooms for Madrasah.

  • Ablution and sanitation facilities.

  • Office and counselling space.

  • Multipurpose community hall.

  • Enhanced welfare and youth development facilities.

This phased approach ensures responsible stewardship of donor funds while allowing the Centre to grow in line with the needs of the community.

Long-Term Community Impact

Supporting Mountain City Islamic Centre is an investment in sustainable community development and a form of Sadaqah Jariyah—a continuous charity whose benefits extend far beyond the initial contribution.

The proposed facility will:

  • Provide a dignified and permanent place of worship for the local Muslim community.

  • Offer structured Islamic education for children, youth, and adults.

  • Strengthen and mentor new Muslims through organised educational and support programmes.

  • Expand Da'wah and community outreach initiatives.

  • Promote moral values, family stability, and social cohesion.

  • Provide a centre for welfare programmes, feeding schemes, and humanitarian assistance.

  • Create opportunities for lifelong learning, spiritual growth, and community service.

Every prayer performed, every Qur'an lesson delivered, every child educated, every revert supported, and every act of charity facilitated within the Centre will, In shā' Allāh, continue to generate lasting rewards for those who contributed towards its establishment.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them."
(Sahih Muslim)

We humbly invite individuals, families, businesses, charitable foundations, and Islamic organisations to partner with Mountain City Islamic Centre in establishing a place where faith, knowledge, compassion, and community development will flourish for generations to come.

May Allah (SWT) accept every contribution, bless every donor abundantly, and make this project a source of continuous reward in this life and the Hereafter. Āmīn.

This project is being undertaken by Darul Uloom Ravia Ilyas Magaliesburg as outreach programme in partnership with Sunninghill Jamaat Khan and Ashraful Aid.
